Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 is a ready to use, powder admixture specially developed for concrete placed under water. Concrete treated with Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture exhibits superior resistance to washout of cement and fines.

Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture produces a concrete mixture highly resistant to washout, while maintaining workability, pump ability and place ability.
  • The following special qualities are also provided:
  • Reduce or eliminate concrete bleeding.
  • Slump characteristics equal to untreated concrete.
  • Virtually eliminates segregation, even with highly fluid, high water-cementitious ratio mixes.
  • Reduce / eliminate costly methods of dewatering.
  • Thixotropic action provides stiffening after concrete is placed.
  • Minimized environmental impact of cement washout in water.
  • Minimal to no effect on set time.

Overview

Usage

Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 is recommended for use in all types of concrete pumps under water, where thixotropic action is desirable. Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture is especially helpful in extreme conditions where conventional concrete or placing techniques would result in a high percentage of material loss due to washout Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture is particularly useful in mortar or grouting applications where mixtures are typically more fluid and have a higher potential for washout.

Shelf life

12 months from date of production if stored properly in undamaged, unopened, original sealed packaging.

Storage conditions

Store in dry conditions at temperatures between +10 °C and +35 °C. Protect from direct sunlight and frost.

Concreting guidance

The standard rules of good concreting practice, concerning production and placing, are to be followed.

Laboratory trials before concreting on site are strongly recommended when using a new mix design or producing new concrete components. Fresh concrete must be cured properly and as early as possible.

Application

Compatibility

Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 may be combined with the following products:

  • Sika® Plastiment®
  • Sika® Viscocrete®
  • Sika Viscoflow®
  • SikaFume®
  • SikaFibre®

To produce flowing and / or self-compacting concrete, special concrete mix design is required.

Pre-trials are recommended and mandatory if combinations with the above products are required.

APPLICATION

Washout as determined by the US Army Corps of Engineers CRD-C61, “Test Method for Determining the Resistance of Freshly Mixed Concrete to Washing Out in Water”, reports the performance of Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture treated concrete compared to untreated concrete.

For under water concrete ACI340R, Chapter 8, “Concrete placed under water” recommends certain basic mixture proportions such as 355kg/m3 or more total cementitious with 15% pozzolanic material, a maximum water/cementitious ratio of 0.45, fine aggregate content of 45 to 55% by volume of total aggregate and air contents of up to 5%. A slump of 15 to 23 cm is generally necessary and occasionally a slightly higher slump is needed. Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture should be used with a water reducing admixture from Sika.

For high slump concrete use Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 with admixture such as Sika® Viscocrete® or Sika Viscoflow® series. This combination will produce a high performance self-compacting concrete that exhibits superior resistance to washout of cement and fines.

Because of variations in job conditions, applications and concrete materials dosage rates outside the recommended range may be required. For additional information on Sika® Stabilizer UW 480 admixture or on its use in developing a concrete mixture with special performance characteristics.
